I read a lot of travel blogs. Lots of good ones. So I wanted to try something new here. Once a month, I’m going to share with you some of the blog posts I’ve read that really stood out, whether they made me laugh, made me cry, showed amazing photography, told a great story, or were really helpful or inspiring in some way. In no particular order, here are some of the best blog posts (in my opinion) from January 2013!
700 days into my “BREAKAWAY” & I share my worst travel habit: Jaime from Breakaway Backpacker has been traveling for just over 700 days now, and I really enjoy his 100 day posts because he reflects back on his trip. Usually they’re a little more serious, but this time he posted a funny one about his worst travel habit. Go check it out for a laugh!
Five Things No One Ever Tells You About the Northern Lights: Jennifer and her husband Tim from JDomb’s Travels were in Iceland around New Year’s, one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. But catching a glimpse of this natural wonder isn’t as easy as everyone would like it to be. This post has great information and advice for anyone thinking of going.
The year of less: Ayngelina from Bacon is Magic has been one of my favorite blogs for a long time. In this post she talks about her goals for 2013, and even though they aren’t all goals I would set for myself (eat vegan one day a week – no way I could do that!), the post really resonated with me. Overall, she’s trying to have less of certain things in order to improve her life. Less noise is something I can get on board with.
Why I Turned Down My Dream Job: Katie from Katie Going Global recently took an amazing 13 month trip through Russia and all of the former Soviet countries. She returned to the US in the fall and began a job search, but when she got offered her dream job, she realized it wasn’t what she wanted. This is a great look at figuring out what you really want, and how it can change without you realizing it.
My 9 Biggest Tips for Blogging Success: I often get emails asking me about blogging from people who want to start a blog or have recently started but aren’t sure how to do it. After doing this for three years in some capacity, I can certainly offer some advice, but I am not trying to make this blog into a full time career. Stephanie from Twenty-Something Travel has a much more professional approach to her blog, and she shares some great advice in this post.
Beauty in the Breakdowns: A Place to Rest Our Heads: Kim from So Many Places just drove 3500 kilometers through India in a rickshaw with two other bloggers. Crazy right? This post tells about one of many mishaps they had along the way, plus some really beautiful writing about where they ended up sleeping one night.
And in case you missed it over on my other site Travel Made Simple: Is “What If” Stopping You From Traveling?
Enjoy the extra travel goodness!

Oh I like this idea. Thanks for including my 700 day post… ah I love the photos I used for that post & yeah I tried to keep it funny this time around. Glad many people don’t think it’s such a bad habit as I thought. Happy to be among great company this month.
Jaime recently posted..What if the walls at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum could speak?
Thanks Jaime! Glad to include you, your post made me laugh!
Thanks for including us in your round up, Ali! The night we finally saw the Northern Lights it was snowing heavily and completed cloud covered. I had given up and gone to bed around 11. I set the alarm for 1am and almost didn’t even get up because I figured it was probably still snowing and a lost cause. You just never know and the complete unpredictability of the Northern Lights inspired my post.
Jennifer recently posted..Passignano Sul Trasimeno: Medieval Town on Lake Trasimeno
Of course! It was a really great post, and so helpful for people who are planning on going to see the Northern Lights. It definitely sounds frustrating, but totally worth it. I really hope I get lucky and see them some day!
I missed some of these – great roundup!
Andrea recently posted..Our West Village Digs – Apartment Rental In New York
Thanks Andrea, these are some good ones!
Checking these out now!
Thanks Andi!
Hey Ali,
I actually started with a similar concept on my blog
There are tons of posts that get retweeted and shared, but I also thought it would be nice to highlight some of the posts I really liked in the past week, also because of how quick things like RT’s and shares ‘expire’.
And of course I’ll be checking out your recommendations:)
Sofie recently posted..A place I love: Los Angeles
I agree, lots of great stuff out there, it’s so easy to miss something. Happy reading!
Thanks Ali, both for including my story and for rounding it all up for me. I’m excited to check out the links.
Kim recently posted..A Night in the Desert: A Jaisalmer Camel Tour
No problem Kim, I really love your writing!
Thanks for the inclusion! Any chance you guys will be at ITB this year? Mike and I are going to be there.
No problem! No, probably not going to ITB unfortunately. We have a lot going on right now, and I just don’t think it’ll work out. Hope to run into you and Mike another time though!
