I visited Iguazu Falls a few years ago after our cruise to Antarctica. Having seen Niagara Falls a few years before that, I was blown away. Niagara is impressive, but it does not compare to Iguazu. Being in a sub-tropic region makes Iguazu Falls so much more lush and beautiful, in my opinion. The falls are located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, so you can visit both sides. But you will need a visa to enter Brazil if you’re a US citizen, which is why we stuck to the Argentina side.

2012 has been such a great year! I hope you all enjoy the holidays over the next week or so. Look for my next post on January 3, 2013!

Iguazu Falls is a must see for me when I finally get to South America. One important thing to note is that Iguazu Falls to my knowledge is in the malaria zone of South America meaning it’s incredibly wise to get vaccinated for malaria before leaving for South America. It sounds a really obvious thing to do but I had a grandfather die in his early 70s after numerous years of ill health. Malaria contributed to this.

    • Ali says:

I’m so sorry about your grandfather! According to the CDC, there is little to no risk of malaria at Iguazu Falls, but the yellow fever vaccine is recommended. Obviously check with a doctor before you go, but always weigh the risk of malaria against the numerous and awful-sounding side effects of anti-malaria medications.

Iguazu Falls was absolutely gorgeous! I’m so glad we were able to add that to our trip, definitely worth it!

I so need to catch up on your blog. Feel like I haven’t in such a long time. I am sorry about that. On another note… awesome photo & um yes this is on my to-do list. When I saw this I thought “damn that girl has been to all continents of the world.” I forget that sometimes and when I remember it’s like okay I have to get on it too…lol!!!

No worries, I’m way behind on yours (and many others) as well. Thanks, glad you like the photo! You’re funny, I may have made it to all 7 continents, but you have seen way more than I have by traveling for almost 2 years straight now. I have no doubt you’ll make it to Iguazu Falls, your missing continents, and much more!

Absolutely love the photo. This convinces me even more that I should definitely take some time (as in: a couple of months:p) to visit South America.

Btw: Is that some kind of boat under that left splunge of water? Looks likes something’s in the water?

    • Ali says:

Thanks Sofie! Let me know if you want any help planning your trip!

It might be a boat. There’s a boat trip you can do that goes really close to the water coming down, you get wet, it’s fun. So that might be the boat in the picture, but it’s hard to tell for sure since it’s so small. That would be my guess though.

    That looks insane! Great pic

Nice shot! Mos def a place not to be missed. And good advice about the malaria drugs — don’t do it! Those drugs made me crazy when I lived in Africa. The very few cases of malaria in Argentina aren’t fatal for healthy adults anyway.

    • Ali says:

Thanks Ande! Yeah, I’ve heard such bad things about those malaria drugs. I know malaria can be bad, but you have to weigh the risk of the drugs with the risk of contracting the disease.
