The year is coming to a close, and I’m realizing just how much travel I did this year. At the beginning of the year, I was still on my round the world trip. Throughout 2012 I traveled in 12 different countries on five different continents. I collected tons of wonderful memories and way more pictures than I will ever actually use. My friend Jeremy from Budget Travel Adventures is doing a Best of Travel 2012, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite travel experiences from this year as well.
Best Travel Dream Fulfilled – Easter Island
Easter Island was such a dream destination, I almost couldn’t believe it when we arrived. Several people actually told me and my friend Amanda that we only needed two or three days here tops, but we easily could’ve spent more than the week we had. The Moai statues are so fascinating, and each one is different. Plus there were Moai at the beach, making a gorgeous setting even more spectacular. I sort of hope Andy wants to go there some day so I have an excuse to go back.
Best Overall Country to Travel in – Turkey
Andy and I went on our belated honeymoon this April to Turkey. It very quickly became one of my favorite countries because of the food, the people, and the variety of natural and cultural things to experience. I loved the busy city of Istanbul, our balloon ride in Cappadocia, and the ruins of Ephesus. I’m really anxious to get back there someday, hopefully soon, so we can spend more time exploring Istanbul and other parts of the country we missed the first time.
Best Travel Surprise Destination – Brussels
I was really surprised by Brussels. It has a very Parisian look and feel to it, but with a much more laid back vibe. A city with three peeing statues within walking distance of each other definitely has a sense of humor. I actually liked every beer I tasted, which isn’t usually my thing. And how do you not like a place that’s so well known for chocolate and fries? This is definitely a city I’d love to spend more time in.
Best Travel Destination That Captured My Heart – Lisbon
Andy and I were only in Lisbon for one night, but what a night it was. It was one of those rare travel moments when I fell in love at first sight with a city, and now I’m itching to go back. Something about the atmosphere, the friendly people, and the salty breeze just relaxed me and made me feel incredibly comfortable there.
These are just a few of my travel memories from this year. We don’t have any concrete plans for 2013 just yet, but we’re always fantasizing about one trip or another, so I’m sure it will be another adventure filled year.
For now, I’m going to do my normal weekly photo post on Saturday and then take a holiday break from blogging. I’m nearly finished with my German class, and I need to spend some time studying. Plus you’d rather spend time with friends and family during the holidays, right? I’ll be back just after the New Year, so I won’t be gone long.
Speaking of the holidays, check out this guest post I wrote on One Giant Step about traveling during Christmas!
