Within my travel addiction is an addiction to sunsets. I love them. My main motivation for going to Santorini was its famous sunsets, I drooled when I found out there was a place to see the sunset behind Moai statues on Easter Island, and my only disappointment on the Great Ocean Road was not being able to see the sun go down by the 12 Apostles. Watching the sun drop below the horizon and seeing the colors of the sky relaxes me, and I try to see them whenever possible on my travels. Today I wanted to share with you a few of my favorites.
It really all started with Santorini. The island totally lives up to its reputation for having some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world. I spent four nights there, and each night I was outside watching this beautiful scene.
The Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge is one of the most recognizable scenes from Australia. The day I wandered over to see them I had no idea I would get such a great view of the sunset, so it was a wonderful surprise.
4000 Islands, Laos
The 4000 Islands are located in southern Laos in the Mekong River. It wasn’t my favorite part of Southeast Asia, but I certainly got a lot of relaxation along this river. I did a lot of thinking while I was there, but I also enjoyed watching the sun go down over the river. I especially loved the tree that stretched out over the water.
Queenstown, New Zealand
While I was on my round the world trip, Andy met me in New Zealand for Christmas and New Year’s. It was our first Christmas together, and we spent it watching the sunset over the lake in Queenstown with sausages from our hostel, and unfortunately no alcohol.
Shores of Chile
A few years ago I went on an Antarctica cruise with my friend Amanda. Since it started from Valparaiso (west of Santiago) we got to see a lot of the Chilean coastline. I took this picture as we were getting closer to the fiords.
Ok maybe the sun is still a little high in the sky to be considered a sunset, but come on, it’s Antarctica! This was a place I never thought I’d travel to until Amanda told me it was the only continent she had left to reach all seven before turning 30. She also inspired me to reach all seven continents before my 30th birthday.
Easter Island was such an amazing place. It exceeded all of my expectations, which were already pretty high. Being able to see the sun go down over the Pacific Ocean with Moai statues as part of the view was more than I could’ve hoped for. It was definitely one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Bonus, this one is actually a sunrise! Sunrises are just as great as sunsets, they just require a little more effort since you have to get up so early. I definitely had to get up early to see the sunrise behind the Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap, Cambodia, but it was totally worth it.
I hope you enjoyed seeing these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. I really love sunsets, and hopefully I’ll collect more favorites to add to my top sunset photos. And maybe even another sunrise or two!
