Our night on Milford Sound was incredible. But Andy and I had no idea it was about to get better when we woke up the next morning. We quickly got dressed, packed up our things, and went upstairs for breakfast. That’s when the staff started making announcements about wildlife, specifically seals and dolphins. With the excitement of little kids, we shoveled down our food and bolted outside with our cameras.
The cruise on Milford Sound was the part of our New Zealand trip that Andy and I had been looking forward to the most. It’s not actually a sound, but a fiord, and it’s known as one of the most spectacular sights in New Zealand. We thought a day trip would be too short and might feel too rushed, so we decided to go with an overnight trip offered by Real Journeys. After our wonderful bus transfer and tour through Fiordland National Park, we arrived at Milford Sound with anticipation.
For my first weekly photo, I thought I’d start with something from the trip that reignited my passion for travel. Though I had traveled outside the US several times before my trip to Greece, this was my first solo trip. This particular day I was on a volcano tour which included trekking up a volcano and two steep island hillsides, a lot for someone like me who isn’t in the best shape. The day ended in Oia where we watched the famous Santorini sunset. It was a tough day physically, but I was starting to realize I was mentally stronger than I thought. Over the course of that 10 day trip, I fell in love with travel all over again.
When I decided that New Zealand would be part of my round the world trip, Andy and I planned that he would meet me there for two weeks for Christmas and New Years. I was busy (and overwhelmed) trying to organize the first few months of my trip in Southeast Asia, so I happily let Andy handle the details for our time in Kiwi Land. One thing we were most excited about seeing was Milford Sound a few hours away from Queenstown on the south island. After a bit of research, Andy picked Real Journeys because they are the only company that offers an overnight cruise instead of just a day trip, and we thought this sounded like a great way to experience Milford Sound without feeling rushed. They also had an option to be picked up in a bus from Queenstown, which worked out great for us since we didn’t have our own transportation.
